Frontier Central School District, Hamburg,
NY This facility houses educational and community support programs for several Southtown school districts. These programs include Erie 1 BOCES, a non-mainstream high school curriculum and work/study program for students, Drug Abuse Resistance and Education (DARE), the Hamburg Youth Bureau, and Family Support Services. The building features separate classroom ‘wings’ for each program that share a computer/resource library, ‘full court’ gymnasium with locker rooms, multi-purpose cafeteria space, and art / foreign language classrooms. The facility is
heated and cooled via a closed loop geothermal system. The system utilizes
the consistency of the earth’s geothermal temperature as a heat source or a
heat sink—when heat is required, the ground source heat pump loop absorbs heat
energy from the ground. Conversely, when cooling is required for the
building, the ground source heat pump loop rejects heat to the ground.
This type of geothermal system has been used successfully in thousands of
installations worldwide. Trautman Associates
secured a $250,000 grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development
Authority (NYSERDA) for the installation of this efficient energy utilization
system. The project received the 2003 Energy and Technology Award from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE). Size: 40,000 Sq. Ft.
